CHAPTER TWENTY

MORGAN

Maddy’s face was pale, but her lips are set thin in determination and she refuses to stop. We’ve been out with the goats for hours, her pointing me in the right direction to help her get them set up. She’s already tamed the biggest one to let her milk it, the only one in milk right now.

I got the lines up and pulled tight. Maddy would hobble over and hold them so I could add the tension on them. This one handed shit is hard. My arm itches to be free from the splint, but I know I still have weeks to go.

Watching her wincing when she steps wrong, or the sweat pouring off of her little face is more painful to me than any broken bone though. I hate like hell I hurt her. I still feel guilty over the wreck. I know on a logical level, it wasn’t my fault. But, I was driving.

She has a will of steel though, and keeps pushing.

I find enough tools in the barn to get in trouble, and manage to get the rough spots on the coop smoothed out. The chickens are thrilled with the buckets of discards from the kitchen. They’ve been making happy noises while digging through it all day.

Maddy sits on the porch steps, an accomplished grin on her pale face. She is nursing a jar of tea Avery had brought out for her earlier. Dusk is falling, and the air finally gives a cool breeze off the hill.

Avery and I made it into the garden today for a little while. She showed me her watering patterns for the different zones, so we can both tag-team keeping everything watered and healthy.

I even managed to steal a few kisses in the shade of the apple trees that left me walking stiffly for a long time afterwards.

“Come on, let’s head in,” I coax Maddy. I help her stand. Her arm shakes from fatigue using the cane all day. I might need to find something else that’s easier for her, but for now at least she can move around without help.

“Go wash up, and then prop that leg up for a while. Can’t have you tearing stitches. Laurie would have my hide,” I say teasingly. Laurie is direct, but she has a good heart.

Her cane thumps its way across the floor as she heads to the bathroom.

I wash up in the kitchen sink, but my eyes are fully on Avery while she works. She gives me the most seductive side eye smile, it instantly makes my pulse pound in my ears.

I use this opportunity to cozy up behind her at the stove. My cool hand sliding around her hip and framing myself against her back. My lips seek out the side of her neck, sweaty from the heat of the kitchen. Deliciously sweet and salty, I nibble my way down her shoulder while my fingers spread across her cool belly under that devilish red tank top.

She giggles and tilts her head, allowing me better access to her delectable skin.
